This pattern is lovely - but it has challenges.
There is a significant error in the lace pattern involving the placement of the pattern repeats. You discover this only 6 rows in when you haven’t knitted enough to get a feel for the pattern as pictured. Despite extensive searching on the Rowan website and on various other sites I could not find an errata update for this. I spent a couple of evening trawling through lace pattern libraries and knitting swatches before I could see where the problem lay.
The problems with the pattern as published begin at Row 7 of the lace pattern. It seems to me that the issue is not with the actual pattern repeat but with the positioning of the repeat across the width of the piece. The pattern asks you to start the repeat a stitch too soon. I tried knitting a single additional knit stitch before commencing the lace pattern repeat on Row 7 and subsequent right side (odd numbered) rows and things worked out fine from there. Please note that I worked within the original number of stitches - I did not need to cast on an extra stitch.I was knitting the medium size so have only worked out the exact pattern amendment for that size below – the stitch changes I made are in red. For those knitting a different size, I hope at least this will give you starting point for your own adjustments and saves you any further searching time!
Size: Medium (to fit 36 inch bust)
Row 1 (RS): K2, *K2, sl 1, k1, psso, K4, K2tog, K2, yfwd, K1, yfwd, rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.
Row 2 and every following alternate or even numbered row: Purl
Row 3: K2, *yfwd, K2, sl 1, K1, psso, K2, K2tog, K2, yfwd, K3, rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.
Row 5: K2, *K1, yfwd, K2, sl 1, K1, psso, K2tog, K2, yfwd, K4, rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.
Row 7: K3, *yfwd, K1, yfwd, K2, sl 1, K1, psso, K4, K2tog, K2, rep from *to last 1 st, K1.
Row 9: Inc in first st, K2, *K3, yfwd, K2, sl 1, K1, psso, K2, K2tog, K2, yfwd, rep from * to last 1 st, inc in last st.
Row 11: K4, *K4, yfwd, K2, sl 1, k1, psso, K2tog, K2, yfwd, K1, rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.
From this point you have the set placement of the lace pattern as further increased stitches are taken into stocking stitch. You also have a vertical repeat of the pattern to refer to visually if you find yourself ‘off kilter’.
